FAQ
Do you offer local pick up?
Yes! You can indicate that you would like local pick up from my SW Calgary home during checkout, and I will reach out to arrange a pickup time and provide additional details.
Why Whisk brooms?
As a collector of hobbies, I fell in love with broom making but had trouble justifying the space it would take for me to make full sized brooms. Making whisk brooms allows me to efficiently create stock for the shop while also allowing me to continually experiment.
Do you do custom brooms?
Yes! I am always happy to take on custom whisk brooms. Let me know what you're picturing at [email protected]
Do you do full sized brooms?
I am open to custom fullsize brooms. Let me know what you're looking for at [email protected]. If I'm unable to take on a request, I am happy to refer you to some other awesome local and domestic broomsquires.
Do you teach classes?
I am open to private classes for small groups, depending on the supplies I have on hand and the demands of my day job. Let me know what you're looking for at [email protected]. If I'm unable to take on a request, I am happy to refer you to some other awesome local instructors.
Where does Broomcorn come from?
Broomcorn is actually the Sorghum Bicolor plant! It grows in a similar manner to regular corn on a long stalk but rather than producing a cob, it produces brushy fibers that can be transformed into sturdy natural brooms once dried. I grow a humble crop of broom corn in my garden each year but due to Calgary's short growing season, the plants do not grow quite as large as they need to be. I incorporate my locally grown broomcorn into commerical broomcorn sourced from Mexico.
Where does your lavender come from?
The lavender I source for my brooms comes from a beautiful Vancouver Island farm.
Where did the name come from?
Saturn's orbit of the earth takes about 29.5 years. Many people associate the return of Saturn to the position it was in when they were born as a time of maturity and change. This is both a time of metamorphosis but also turbulence. I launched Saturnine Weaving Co as an artistic side project during my own Saturn's return as a means to focus my creative energies as I juggled my way through multiple jobs and Grad school. The roman god Saturn is known as the god of Agriculture and Harvest, something I think about when I harvest broom corn from my own garden.
